Each fall I have the joyful opportunity of tutoring a new group of 13-14 year old homeschool students in the Classical Conversations Challenge I program. I’m excited that this year my own son, Jonathan, will be part of that group. One of my goals each year is to help the entire class discover the wonder of mathematics. The other four days of their school week they are studying math lessons and working on problems in their textbooks, so when we gather together as a group on Tuesdays I am intent on showing them why their time has been well-spent. One of the first ways I do this is by showing them the short video below. If you’ve never seen it before, the video uses plants to show how the Fibonacci sequence of numbers (0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, etc.) appears as a pattern in Creation, helping bring order to our world. The sequence appears in many other places (a piano keyboard, the family-trees of honeybees, etc.), but this is a fun introduction for the students. Check it out!
